The first is supposed to be the great Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal who is from Mallorca.

Works from the open air gallery "Kupferdiebe" in Hamburg

"Kupferdiebe" means translated "copper thieves". => "The copper thieves present Hamburg's first open air gallery".

Plate below: "The copper thieves take care of it. Because they are the gang in this district, the Gang district. Hamburg's oldest district." (I suppose they refer to the district called "Gänseviertel" where the gallery is situated)

"Kupferdiebe" seems to be an open air gallery in Hamburg (near Gänsemarkt). I took these photos last year in July, sorry to post these so late !!! I haven't been there since so I guess it might look different now. It was curious since I came accross this place by accident and was positively suprised to find lot's of great stencils there !

I came accross this giant stencil of an astronaut in Berlin on the backside wall of a house. I hope you can capture the size of it on this photo. It was really amazing so see such a huge stencil and I would have loved to see how it was done ! Great work !!!

These were paste-ups that I saw in Berlin, all by "emporte-moi" which means "take me with you" in English. I haven't seen these anywhere else than in Berlin. I am not sure if the name refers to the Canadian/Swiss/French movie from 1999 with the same name but it looks a bit like.

The Reverse Graffiti Project

This a short documentary about a technique called "reverse graffiti" or "clean tagging". The artist, "Moose" is the pioneer of this technique and uses natural methods and natural cleaners to create a large scale mural in San Francisco by cleaning pollution and dirt from the walls of the Broadway Tunnel. The film was directed by acclaimed documentarian Doug Pray who recently directed the full length film "Surfwise". Take a look ! I think it's quite interesting. Interview with RIPO !

I did not have the chance to interview RIPO personally when he was at the Difusor event in Barcelona last summer but he gave me answers to my questions after I got in touch with him by e-mail. He is currently travelling in South America, check out his blog about the tour ! (You find the link at the end of the interview)

What is the meaning of your name ? / Why did you choose this name ?

Ripo comes from repo, short for repossess in English. Repossess - take something back that "belongs" to you, with or without permission.

2. Since when have you been doing stencils ?

Stencils are just one part of a lot of things i get my hands dirty with. But I started getting into that about 2003

3. What led you to do stencils ? Have you been doing graffiti before or other type of art ?

Lots of things led me to stencils, mostly my eyes checking out walls and seeing a great and versatile way to repeat a graphic image anywhere. Graffiti I've always loved but as a kid I usually stuck to being a fan and just constantly drawing and painting on my own and such, something I've done since about 5 years old.

4. What are the materials and techniques you use for your stencils ?

It's changed over time, and depending on where i want to paint it, size, detail, etc. I guess for anybody wondering what to use thin cardboard (cereal box weight) and acetate are a good place to start.

5. What is / are your preferred spots to put your stencils ?

6. Is there a place where you would love to put a stencil but you never dared ?

I try to dare myself to do a lot of things...

7. In which cities have you so far been doing stencils ? Do you have a preferred city ?

Barcelona, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, Istanbul, Athens, Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Milan, New York City, and I'm currently traveling across another 16 or so countries in South and Central America painting, although not with stencils, so the list is far from finished...

8. Is there a message you want to transmit with your stencil art ?

There's a message I want to transmit with everything I do, but that message can change daily.

9. Are there other artists you admire or influenced your work ?

Lots of them...

10. What do you think makes your style different from other stencil artists ?

I tend to focus a lot on typography, in my stencils and in my other works. Does that make me different?

11. How do you get inspired or where do you get your ideas from ?

I get inspired by drawing, traveling, meeting other artists, current situations in my life and in the world, it can really come from anywhere as long as i keep my mind and eyes open.

12. Have you ever been in trouble because of your stencils ?

13. Which of your stencils do you consider the best one you have done so far ?

The next one I haven't made yet...

14. What do you think about the commercial side of stencils ?

The commercial world is sticking its hands in everywhere, and has been for years. It's up to every artist to decide to work with it (or not) on their own terms. I just think if you're going to work with a company don't sacrifice yourself or your ideals and make it a mutually interesting project for both yourself and the company.

15. In your opinion: a good stencil should be: funny, political, controversial, artistic, poetic, multi-coloured, black and white or ?

a good stencil should be made...

16. Anything else you want to tell us ???

This is an interview I did with fremantle during the Difusor in Barcelona. I love his works, it's amazing that he is able to cut out all these tiny details!
The interview was done in French, his mother tongue and I translated it later into English.

What is the meaning of your name ? / Why did you choose this name?

My name comes from a joke with friends quite some time before I started stenciling. I usually sign all my stencils with my logo instead of a name. I only had to use my name "fremantle" mostly on the internet where I had to have a name that could be written so I didn’t think much when choosing it ! I prefer using a logo when painting. In general a lot of people don’t see the connection, I like the fact that people can get that it’s the same person doing all the work but I don’t really care about having a proper name.

Since when have you been doing stencils?

Approximately for 5 years now.

What led you to do stencils ? Have you been doing graffiti before or other type of art ?

No, not at all. I never studied art and regarding graffiti, well, when I was younger, I had friends that did graffities and I tried it maybe once or twice but not seriously and came to stencil art rather by accident. I actually started when I bought a new skateboard deck and I couldn’t figure out the back and front and I wanted to paint something on, and the easiest way to do this was a stencil. So I started from there and then I did the same on some old broken skates.

What are the materials and techniques you use for your stencils?

I usually design the basics of my stencils on computer before, either to separate the colors or simply to enlarge a picture I will trace by hand later. Then I print them on thick paper (at least 200g/m²) that I put all together with tape for large pieces.
Either if I have already done the color separation or not on the computer before, I always print something that is way too detailed to be cut straight from it, and I trace with a pencil the parts to be cut and parts to be left, so I have a total control of the level of detail and can find a way to join the different parts with bridges that integrates well in the design.
For the cutting, I use a big box cutter which is quite unusual since most people prefer to use smaller tools like exactos but I have always used a big one and I am used to it. I cut on glass, that’s more precise.

What is / are your preferred spots to put your stencils?

Sometimes I see maybe a wall where I could imagine a stencil but that’s rather seldom. Normally I do first the stencil and then look for a place I like.

In which cities have you so far been doing stencils?

In Paris of course, a few in Berlin, in Lisbon and in Stoke in England, near Manchester because there are some of my crew and we meet from time to time.

Is there a message you want to transmit with your stencil art?

The fact to paint the stencils on the street is already a kind of message, to put them on public spaces against all the publicity. To show people that not all illegal things are bad. Just because something is legal does not necessarily mean that it is intelligent. And then when I did the portraits of people from my travels, it is also to invite people to travel a bit in their minds.

Are there other artists you admire or influenced your work?

As for the techniques, the only one that influenced me is a friend called Sadhu because what I do for the big stencils is first making a multicolored background before applying a monochromatic stencil and that is what he is also doing. Otherwise I am looking a bit what the others do but do it my own way.

How do you get inspired or where do you get your ideas from?

Like I said I have several subjects but I am always trying not to be fixed on one idea. There are a lot of ideas that came from the photos I took at my travels. It is very interesting to transmit the expressions from faces. Specially the difference that there is of faces from poor or underdeveloped countries and then to transmit these with a technique that is rather "urban" or very modern. I also like urban landscapes but I paint these normally more on canvas.

You would have to do a stencil about Bush. Describe briefly how it would look like.

Well, I have a political awareness but I have never done political stencils since I think that this is quite delicate. In fact there are only a few people who are good at this because doing a stencil of Bush with a statement "Bush is incompetent" does not really have a big impact since everybody knows that already.

Have you ever been in trouble because of your stencils?

It was just once with the police. Otherwise the people in general don’t destroy my stencils but are rather interested in them.

Which of your stencils do you consider the best one you have done so far?

There is a profile of a woman that I normally do in the streets. It is because I like the photo a lot but specially because of the technical aspect since it is the first stencil I did that stands like one piece, you just have to attach top and bottom and it’s perfectly flat on the wall, it also makes it more resistant.

What do you think about the commercial side of stencils?

I don’t think that there is a commercial side. Banksy for example, I mean if there are people buying his stuff for a lot of money, why not, it’s not his fault. On the other side, the publicity is now often using images that are like stencils. I had been proposed, for example, to work for publicity but it was really crap. More and more brands are also trying to use stencils or other street art for publicity.

Anything else you want to tell us ???

Well, just that the stencil technique is very easy to do. People just have to try it, the basis is not difficult and later it is developing. Everybody can actually do it, it is quite simple and you don’t even need much material. Just take a photo, print it big and then take a cutter that doesn’t cost you anything. The great thing is that a stencil is democratic.

When we were walking around in Hamburg in Altona, we passed at a garage and I couldn't believe my eyes! Artiste ouvrier, one of my favourite stencil artists had left a stencil collage there together with another artist called quasikunst. I think it was like an advertising for an exhibition in Altona. Unfortunately, it only started the next day and we were leaving and couldn't make it.... As you can see, some stencils where already covered by graffiti tags, it was a shame. I have recently spent a week in Hamburg and had a chance to take some pics of stencils. So far, I found out that you find most stencils in the so called "Schanzenviertel". Here are some from "Los Piratos" from Hamburg. Sorry, some photos look a bit blurry but most of them were put up quite high and it was difficult to take the photo! Here are some more from Los Piratos from Hamburg. Painting stencils on these stickers for parcels that you get from the post office (Päckchenaufkleber) is a very common thing to do. It's very practical since you can prepare the stencil at home and then later just stick it somewhere. People who know these stickers can see that Los Piratos in this case actually "copied" the sticker itself as a stencil! Very curious!

Stencil Nation Book to come out in June 2008 !!!

Russell from stencilarchive is going to publish the so called "Stencil Nation Book" in June 2008 ! It is a collection of photos of stencils from various artists, various parts of the world and much more. I am excited since I could take part as a documentarian and participated with my favourite pics of stencils I took between 2005 and now.

RIPO - mirrors around Barcelona

RIPO had a great idea by fixing several mirrors each one painted with a stencil around Barcelona. It makes the boring urban panorama much more interesting and I am happy each time I come accross a new one. Maybe there are still a few I haven't seen ? The pidgeon is actually a stencil that I came accross long time ago in the Gothic area of Barcelona. I am not sure if it has not been removed yet... But if I remember well, it was on a door, so we might be lucky and it is still there !

I went to Stuttgart in Germany recently. Unfortunately, I didn't find too many stencils. I guess also because I didn't really know the area were to find them.
